The idea for the museum all began back in 1983, when Yamamoto Hatsujiro donated his art collection, comprising 31 works by Saeki Yuzo, to the Osaka Municipal Government. Osaka began actively collecting in 1990, and the collection has been growing steadily since then.
The collection of the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka now comprises a wide range of artworks, including famous pieces by Western masters such as Amedeo Modigliani and Umberto Boccioni, works by Osaka artists such as Koide Narashige and Ikeda Yoson, key works by contemporary artists such as Yoshihara Jiro and Morimura Yasumasa, as well as design works such as posters and furniture pieces, bringing it domestic and international acclaim. Here, the Artrip Museum showcases a small selection of these works, offering high resolution images and informative articles.
Two major pillars of the collection are the Osaka-born master painter Saeki Yuzo, and the avant-garde Gutai Art Association, a group based in Nakanoshima close to the location of the new museum. The Artrip Museum includes sections dedicated to Saeki and Gutai, covering each in sufficient detail to convey some of the fascination of these artists and their works.
This website not only introduces the museumʼs collection but also updates information about progress in the new museum development plan and other topics. The website also shares information about its archives, one of the museumʼs major programs.
It is our hope that the Artrip Museum, through its virtual exhibits and up-to-date information, will provide an easy and convenient portal into an expansive world of art.
